Preserving Our History...
Our Church had its beginning in the heart of God some 48 years ago. Bishop Jose Arrana, now deceased, Evangelist Roberto, now deceased, and Brother Edwin, were sent to Apostle Witherspoon’s home. They began to pray, praise God and speak in other tongues, as the spirit of God gave utterance. The spirit of God continued to move, pouring out the anointing power of the Holy Ghost. Before the interpretation of the tongues, Apostle Witherspoon’s feet and lips were anointed.
After he was anointed, he was commissioned and sanctioned to do the work of the Lord. The interpreter said that God had given him power, that wherever his feet shall trod, that God would bless. Several days later, after the manifestation of the almighty God, a call came from Helen Birts, now deceased, that the Westminister Presbyterian Church was vacant and that he could start having services on the fourth Sunday in January, 1976.
Bishop Witherspoon walked into the Westminister Presbyterian Church on Vermont and Madison Avenues in Atlantic City, NJ, with his immediate family, his wife, Pastor Juanita Witherspoon, their children, Thelma, Loukeeler, Labooion, Cotteth, Luke, Jr. and Marcus Witherspoon, The Late Mother Alice Wharton Washington, our first member, and many well wishers. The Church began as a mission and was called “The Jesus Christ Evangelism Program.” In 1979 the name of the church was changed and incorporated under the Westminister Evangelistic Church. In 1984, the Westminister Evangelistic Choir recorded with the late Rev. Isaac Douglas. In 1986, the Westminister Village Plaza Retreat Center in Hamilton Township, NJ was purchased and is used as a Christian facility which included 8 1/2 acres of ground, a picnic area, office building, eight cabins and a parsonage.
In January 1994 Bishop Louis Witherspoon established Westminister II, in Louisburg, North Carolina. March 4, 1994 was a devastating time in the ministry, as our place of worship was destroyed by fire. We began worshipping at the First Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania and Pacific Avenues, Atlantic City. In March, 1995, we became affiliated with the Bible Way Church of Lord Jesus Christ Worldwide, Inc. until September, 2001.
In March, 2003 we began worshipping at the House of God on Hummock Avenue and Chelsea Community Presbyterian Church, 9 S Chelsea Avenue, where Pastor Juanita Witherspoon was installed Pastor in 2003. Since January, 2004, all services of the ministry are currently held at the Chelsea Community Presbyterian Church. Also in December, 2004, the name of the church was changed to Westminister Christian Worship Center. In 2015, Vermont and Madison Avenues were renamed to Bishop Luke Witherspoon Way.
Many great Bishops, Apostles, Overseers, Pastors, Prophets, Elders, Evangelists, Ministers, Deacons, Missionaries and teachers have been birthed out of Westminister.
On Sunday, February 16, 2020, history has been made as the mantle was passed down from Bishop Luke Witherspoon, Sr. to Dr. Thelma Witherspoon. She now currently serves as the Senior Pastor of Westminister Christian Worship Center.
We come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. To God be the glory for the things he has done over the past 44 years.8
